Mosteiro da Serra Do Pilar

Porto, Portugal

This monastery was originally constructed in the 16th century, and features the only round cloister in Portugal. The site perches dramatically above the Douro River and overlooks the city of Porto. In 1996, UNESCO declared this portion of the city a World Heritage Site. The site was converted into an army base. As the army was considering vacating this base, proposals were sought for the redevelopment of this historic site.

This proposal examined the possibility of converting the site into a College of Art with residenses, studios, and galleries for professional artists.
