Golden Gate Bridge - Suicide Deterrent
San Francisco, CA
This project reviewed the effectiveness of suicide deterrent systems, the wind load implications of a suicide deterrent system on the Golden Gate Bridge, the cost of the systems, impact of bridge maintenance and security, and potential design solutions and aesthetic impacts.
The study determined that a suicide deterrent system was feasible to add onto the existing structure and could improve the wind stability of the bridge. This study provided direction for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District to incorporate a suicide deterrent system onto the existing bridge. Edward Pais served as the Project Manager on the Phase 1 Feasibility Study for MacDonald Architects.
